The Ancient Process of Saponification

The wisdom of Mother Nature has taught us the magic of soap making naturally occurs by a chemical reaction,  which occurs when an acid (oil or fat) and a base (lye) combine to form a salt (soap).  According to Cleaninginstitute.org and Soaphistory.net, Ancient Babylonians understood soap making as early as 2800 BC. We know this because archeologists have found soap-like material in clay cylinders from that time. These cylinders were inscribed with what we understand as saying, “fats boiled with ashes."

Records also show that ancient Egyptians bathed regularly. The Ebers papyrus, which is known as a medical document from about 1500 BC, describes using animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap-like material used for treating skin diseases, as well as for washing. Many other ancient civilizations used early forms of soap as well. The term "soap" actually got its name from an ancient Roman legend about Mount Sapo. Rain would wash down the mountain mixing with animal fat and ashes, resulting in a clay mixture found to make cleaning easier.

Cold Process Soap

Cold process soap making is the original, traditional method of making soap by combining fat or oil (animal or plant based) with sodium hydroxide lye then blending in addition of essential oils and colorants as required. This treatment causes a chemical reaction called saponification which takes up to 48 hours.

Melt & Pour Soap

Our melt and pour soaps are traditional soap bases with additives such as organic compounds like sugars and/or fatty acids that allow the soap to be melted and remolded. The soap bases that we use do not contain synthetic detergents or parabens. They have excellent skincare performance with 100% of the later produced from saponification of natural oils producing real soap.
